What forms character

Marcus Aurelius begins not with doctrine but with gratitude: character grows from examples carried long enough.

From my grandfather Verus I learned gentleness and mildness, and to abstain from anger and passion. From the reputation and memory of my father I learned modesty and manly conduct. From my mother I learned piety and generosity; not only to abstain from doing wrong, but even from wishing to do it.
